KILEI

Slei and I stand at the hill overlooking Lyan. There’s not a soldier to be seen patrolling the outer walls. Even the homeless who normally loiter outside the walls have now cleared out.

At the top of the wall, the king is fortifying the defenses, stationing archers, bringing the cannons, and building bonfires so that he’s prepared with hot oil when the horde storms the city and climbs its walls.

If we rush the city, we will suffer many casualties, unless we are crafty about how we enter.

As I observe the enemy preparing for conflict, Slei’s throwing glances at me, which tells me he’s thinking about me and something that involves me and he’s just waiting for some sort of a sign on my face so he can strike.

He’s always been a people watcher, this one. It makes me feel like I’m back inside the alcove for viewing.

“Spit it out, Slei,” I order.

“What happened during the dinner?”

“We ate.” I have no intention of telling either of my brothers that the king offered us the western lands and a princess for me. Now that they’re mated, they might try to talk me into taking the offer and leaving with their mates so I and the women are safe while they stay here and fight the king.

“You took the Kilseleian queen.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

“To piss him off.” And other reasons.

“I was hoping it would be more than that.”

“It is.”

“Your mating sigil remains dead.”

Not liking that he’s pointing out that the mating sigil on my chest remains unclaimed, I growl. “But my dick is very much alive, in case you must know.”

“You know what I mean.”

“We don’t need my mating sigil to defeat the king.”

Slei faces me. “We need more males. About a thousand of them, which are inside the city. We could’ve negotiated for them, could’ve snuck in and rescued them, could’ve planned something different, but with his queen stolen and the king humiliated and the lycans closing in, I have no idea what he’s planning. Do you?”

“We never knew how he plans to fight us off, and we’ve been here for over a moon cycle. We have no spies inside his court. Not a single one.”

I scent a female climbing the hill and hear her laborious breathing. I turn and see Andy, her brown hair bouncing off her cheeks. She reaches us breathing hard enough that I think she might deposit a baby on my boots.

“I’m getting out of shape,” she says.

“Nonsense,” I say. “You’ve never looked more agile or prettier.”

Andy scrunches up her nose. “You think so?”

“I know so.”

“Who would’ve thought you can dole out compliments?”

I wink. “You have something for me?”

Andy nods. “I showed her the portrait of my father, and she confirmed he’s also her father.”

“Excellent news.” Mag and Andy share a father who has spent the majority of his life in court serving the king. The mating follows bloodlines, and if this man already fathered two horde mates, I speculated he fathered more within the court. Still, it does not mean
